There are several questions that you need to ask prior to deciding on a drapery style and fabric.
Is privacy a prime consideration? Do you need pinch pleated drapes instead of valances with shades underneath?
Is light control an issue? Do you get a strong morning sun or afternoon sun that creates a glare that you want to control? Do you need blackout lining or is regular lining adequate?
What obstacles are in the way that might limit your style choices? Is the window too close to the wall? Is there a fireplace or cabinets that might limit your rod choices or that wouldn't allow enough room for drapes to stack on the sides of the window?
Do you have a fabulous view and don't want to cover too much window? Or does the room need as much light as possible, and thus you want the window to remain as open as possible?
Do you prefer longer window treatments that will reach the floor or do you just want a touch of color at the top of your windows?
Do you have strong vertical or horizontal lines in your home (such as might be found in log homes) and need to soften those lines with the curved lines of a softly draped fabric valance at your windows?
Do you prefer tailored or romantic looks? Who will be the primary occupant of the room? Will the window treatments reflect their style?
After asking these type of questions, then it becomes easier to narrow down your window treatment choices. Deciding on a curtain, drape, valance, or window treatment style first will make fabric selection.easier.
